Why a boarding pass works so well
A trip is an abstract thing to give a child. A boarding pass is not. It is a physical object with their own name printed on it, and that is what makes the news land — especially for kids under seven, who need something they can hold before a promise about next month means anything.
It is also the reveal that survives the moment. Parents tell us the pass ends up on the fridge, then in the suitcase, then in a memory box.
How to use it
Fill in each child's name and where you are going. Add the real departure date if you want the countdown to be accurate, or leave it blank. Print it, cut along the line, and decide how to hand it over.
The simplest version: put it on their breakfast plate and say nothing. The slightly better version: put it in an envelope addressed to them, because kids almost never get mail.

- How far ahead should I give it to them?
- It depends on the age. Under four, the night before. Four to six, a few days. Seven to nine, about a month. Older kids can handle a couple of months and enjoy the planning.
- What paper should I print on?
- Regular paper is fine. Card stock feels more like the real thing and survives being carried around, which it will be.
