How it works
The message prints in symbols with a blank line under each one, and the decoder key sits at the bottom of the same sheet. Your child works through it letter by letter and writes the answer in.
Most kids solve the short words first and then guess the rest, which is exactly how real codebreaking works.
Write your own message
Leave the box blank and it writes “WE ARE GOING TO” plus your destination. Or type anything: a riddle, an inside joke, or an instruction like “LOOK IN THE FREEZER” if you are running a longer hunt.
The alphabet is the same every time on purpose. A family doing a second one already knows half the symbols, which makes it faster and more fun rather than starting over.
Good ages for this one
Seven and up, roughly. It needs confident letter recognition and enough patience to work through a line. Younger children love it as a team activity with an adult reading the key out.

- How long does it take a child to solve?
- Ten to twenty minutes for a seven- or eight-year-old on a short message. Longer messages take longer, and that is usually the point.
- Can I write my own message?
- Yes. Type anything up to 120 characters. Letters get symbols, and numbers or punctuation print as themselves.
- Is the code different every time?
- No, deliberately. The key is printed on the same page, and keeping one fixed alphabet means a second puzzle is quicker because they already know some symbols.
- What age is this good for?
- Around seven and up on their own. Younger kids enjoy it as a team job with a grown-up reading out the key.
