What's inside the PDF
- Three easy crosswords (ages 6–8) — animals, weather, foods.
- Three medium crosswords (ages 8–10) — sports, vocabulary, U.S. states.
- Two challenging crosswords (ages 10–11) — outer space, mythology.
- Word bank at the top of every puzzle (no wild-guess required).
- Answer key at the back.
How to use them
Every puzzle includes a word bank so kids can solve by elimination — the puzzles teach crossword mechanics, not vocabulary by attack. We recommend starting with the easy puzzles even for older kids so they get a sense of the format. Once they're comfortable with crossings and clue-reading, the harder puzzles add real challenge. Great for: road trips, classroom enrichment, library quiet hours, and waiting-room sanity.
What this builds
Crossword puzzles are spelling, vocabulary, and reading-comprehension practice in disguise. Solving a clue requires reading carefully, narrowing meaning, then cross-checking letters — three skills at once. The word bank lowers the entry barrier, which matters: kids who try crosswords without a bank tend to give up. With a bank, they learn to enjoy the format.

Frequently asked questions
- What age can start solving crossword puzzles?
- With a word bank, most kids can start around age 6 (first grade). Without a word bank, age 9 or 10 is more typical. Our easy puzzles include the bank so first-graders can play.
- Are these like the New York Times crossword?
- No. NYT crosswords assume adult-level general knowledge. These are themed kids puzzles with shorter words, clearer clues, and word banks. Same format, different difficulty.
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes — the last pages of the PDF have every puzzle solved.
- Can I print these for a classroom?
- Yes, for a single classroom. Don't redistribute the PDF file online.
- Is this really free?
- Yes. Sunlight Kids has activity books for every age — 2–5, 4–7, 7+, and adults. This pack is a free sample of the kind of work that's inside.
