Best Crossword Puzzle Books for Kids (2026 Picks by Age)

A crossword is a reading puzzle before it is a word puzzle, which is why the right book depends far more on how a child reads than on their age. The single most useful feature in a kids crossword book is one almost no listing mentions: a word bank. With one, a first-grader solves by matching and crossing letters. Without one, the same puzzle is a vocabulary test, and most kids under nine quit on the first page. Note on this site: we publish crossword books for kids ourselves, and ours are below, flagged as ours. Everything else is what we'd buy as parents, and every pick lists what it does badly, ours included.

How we chose

A word bank for beginners

For ages 6–8 a word bank turns a crossword from guessing into reasoning: read the clue, find the candidates that fit the length, check the crossing letters. Drop the bank around ten, when a child can produce the answers themselves.

Clues written for kids, not shortened adult clues

"Large striped cat" is a kids clue. "Feline of Bengal" is an adult clue with smaller words. A good kids book uses things a child knows — pets, school, sports, food — and avoids crossword-ese like ERNE and ESNE entirely.

Grid size that matches attention span

Ten to fifteen answers is a sitting for a seven-year-old. A 15×15 grid with forty clues is an afternoon, and an unfinished puzzle teaches a child that crosswords are hard. Look for small themed grids early, bigger ones later.

Answer keys that don't spoil the next puzzle

Kids check their work, and an answer page that shows four solutions at once gives away the next three. Keys laid out one per puzzle, or clearly separated, let a child check without cheating by accident.

Our top picks by age

  1. #1

Sunlight Kids — Crossword Puzzles for Kids: Easy, Medium & Hard

    Ages 6–12
Crossword Puzzles for Kids: Easy, Medium & Hard lying open on a wooden table, showing two crosswords (“School Life” and “Same Idea, Different Word”), next to a yellow pencil

Best single book for a family with more than one age, or a kid you expect to improve fast. 100 themed crosswords, one per page on an 8 × 10 trim, climbing from easy word-bank puzzles to bigger grids with harder clues. Themes a child already knows, clues written for kids, and answer keys in the back. Weakness: a third of the book is at each level, so a kid who only wants easy puzzles gets about 33 before the jump. If you know the level, the single-level editions below give you 100 at that level.

  2. #2

    Picture-clue crosswords for early readers

    Ages 5–7

Best first crossword. Each clue is a small drawing — a dog, a hat, a sun — and the answer is the word for it, so a child who is still sounding words out can play. They teach the grid mechanics (across, down, shared letters) before the reading load arrives. Weakness: outgrown within months, and the vocabulary is necessarily tiny. Treat it as a bridge, not a library.

  3. #3

    Spelling and vocabulary crossword workbooks

    Ages 7–10

Best if the goal is school practice. These tie crosswords to grade-level spelling lists, which suits a teacher or a parent working on specific words, and the format makes revision feel less like revision. Weakness: they feel like homework because they are. A child who would happily do crosswords for fun may decide they don't like them after a workbook.

  4. #4

    Pocket-size travel crossword books

    Ages 8–12

Best for planes and car seats. Small, light, and cheap enough that losing one on a trip doesn't matter. Weakness: small pages mean small squares, and children write large. Grids get crowded, erasing tears the thin paper, and word banks are often cut to save space.

  5. #5

    Junior editions of newspaper-style crosswords

    Ages 11+

Best step up for a confident 11- or 12-year-old who finds kids puzzles too easy. Standard grids, real cluing conventions, and a direct path to the daily newspaper puzzle. Weakness: the jump is steep. A child who struggles here usually needs a harder kids book first, not a push.

What to look for in a crossword book for kids

Check a middle page, not the cover

Open the preview to the middle of the book. If the puzzle there has a word bank and clues your child could read aloud, the book fits. If it looks like an adult puzzle with cartoons around it, it doesn't.

One puzzle per page

Two puzzles per page halves the square size. Kids need room to write, cross out and write again.

Themes over random fill

A themed puzzle (all ocean animals, all sports) gives a child a way in: once they get two answers, they can guess the rest of the set. Random-word grids give them nothing to hold on to.

Paper that takes an eraser

Crosswords get erased more than any other puzzle. Thin paper tears; bright white, heavier stock survives a dozen corrections.

DIY vs buy

Start with the free printable. Our crossword pack for kids has eight puzzles across three levels with word banks and answer keys, and it will tell you in one afternoon whether crosswords click and at which level. If they do, a book is better value than printing: 100 puzzles, bound, with nothing to lose in the car.
