How to use them
Print on plain letter paper. There is no colour anywhere in the pack, so a page costs the same to print as a page of text, and you can run the whole thing on a home printer without thinking about ink. Print single-sided if you want to work on a lap tray or a bed table — a stapled booklet has to be held flat with one hand, which is the thing that quietly stops a puzzle book from being used. - How large is the print in these puzzles?
- The grid letters are 20 point bold in half-inch cells, and the word banks are set at 15 point. For comparison, a standard newspaper word search runs about 8 point in quarter-inch cells. If you can read a large print paperback comfortably, you can solve these.
- Are the answer keys large print too?
- Yes, and that is the part most books get wrong. The key is 10 separate pages, one per puzzle, printed at exactly the size of the puzzle with the answers shaded. An answer key set at a fraction of the puzzle size makes a large print book useless for anyone who wants to check their own work.
- Are these suitable for seniors or for someone with low vision?
- They are built for exactly that reader. Large type, heavy grid rules, one puzzle per page, and high contrast black on white with no background tint. If the solver uses a magnifier for standard print, these will usually be readable without one.
- Do any words run backwards?
- Not in the first five puzzles — those run across, down and diagonally only, which is the gentler way in. From puzzle six onward words may run in any of the eight directions, so the pack gets harder as you go rather than staying flat.
