How to use them
Print one card per kid and hand them out before you pull away — not once somebody is already bored, which is too late. The rules fit on one line: cross out a square when you spot it, and five in a row — across, down or corner to corner — wins. The middle square starts free. One house rule worth having: if two kids call the same thing at the same second, both get it. A four-year-old plays the read-aloud version: an adult reads the squares and the kid hunts. A seven-year-old runs their own card. Five in a row wins; for a longer game, play blackout and fill the whole card, which usually eats about two hours. Everything on these cards is genuinely visible from a car in the United States. Nothing needs a screen and nothing can roll under a seat.
What this builds
Sustained visual attention, mostly — the thing a screen actively erodes. A kid playing bingo is scanning, categorizing and holding a list in their head for an hour at a time. The quieter benefit is that it turns the window into the entertainment. Kids who look out of the window on a long drive arrive in a better mood than kids who look down at a tablet, and they notice where they went.

- How many bingo cards are in the PDF?
- Eleven playable cards: eight daytime cards, two night-drive cards, and one blank card your kid fills in themselves. Every daytime card is different, so a carful of kids can all play at once without hunting the same squares.
- What age is road trip bingo for?
- Roughly 4 to 10. Under about six, an adult reads the squares out and the kid does the spotting. From six or seven they can run their own card, and by nine they will be enforcing the rules on everyone else.
- Do I need anything besides the printout?
- One pencil or crayon per kid. Nothing in this pack has pieces, stickers or anything that can end up under a seat.
- Can we play it more than once?
- Yes. Play five-in-a-row on the way out and blackout — every square on the card — on the way home. Blackout usually lasts a couple of hours.
